SEREMBAN, July 26 — The Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (CUEPACS) is expecting some good news for civil servants from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Aug 8.
Its president Datuk Adnan Mat said the government has made a high commitment to improving the welfare of civil servants in the country, including introducing the Malaysian Remuneration System (SSM) which has been in use since Nov 1, 2002.
“Cuepacs is thankful that the Prime Minister in his recent statement said that the government is reviewing and will announce something for civil servants soon.
“We were informed that there will be a gathering of civil servants with the Prime Minister on Aug 8, hopefully at that meeting, there will be something for civil servants as what was proposed to the Prime Minister at the meeting on July 18,” he told reporters at the Malaysia MADANI Civil Service Programme Together with Cuepacs and the Community Communications Department (J-Kom) here today.
Adnan said the Prime Minister has chaired a meeting regarding the specific needs of civil servants in future and a study team for the remuneration system was set up to fine-tune various matters to improve the welfare of civil servants.
“We hope there will be some form of relief for civil servants to cover family expenses while waiting for the study on the remuneration system to be finalised,” he said.
It was reported that the Prime Minister will announce several fixed remunerations for civil servants in the next week or two.
