KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12 – The Scouts Association of Malaysia (PPM) aims to have one million members by 2030 compared to 600,000 at this point, said Acting National Chief Scout Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Zin Bidin.
Mohd Zin, who is also the National Chief Scout Commissioner, said the target of one million scouts in 2030 is not impossible to achieve.
“However, there are a handful of schools that limit membership (only 30 allowed) to joining scouts, so if they remove that limit, we can get more members.
“We will discuss with Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, Malaysian Education director-general Datuk Pkharuddin Ghazali and National Scout Council member Tan Sri Johari Abdul to change some related policies,” he said after appearing on Bernama TV’s ‘Apa Khabar Malaysia’ programme today.
Mohd Zin also said PPM will do a holistic brand refresh this year to ensure that the uniformed unit remains relevant according to current developments.
He said a special committee had been established to draft a questionnaire to be distributed to stakeholders consisting of parents, schools, and young scouts to take their views.
Mohd Zin informed that in addition to working with the World Organisation of the Scout Movement (WOSM), some PPM representatives will be sent to a brand refresher workshop organised by the Asia-Pacific Scout Region in Manila, Philippines, in the middle of this year.
“We will also hold workshops at the national level and are expected to get a manual for the complete PPM brand refresh in September this year,” he said.
