RAMALLAH, July 8 – Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer had a phone conversation on Sunday, where Abbas congratulated Starmer on his Labour Party’s victory in the recent parliamentary elections.

Abbas expressed confidence that the new British government would enhance the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two nations.

He wished Starmer success and prosperity for the UK, reported Palestine News Agency (WAFA).

During the call, Abbas updated Starmer on the situation in the Palestinian territories, stressing the urgent need for international efforts to achieve a ceasefire, deliver humanitarian aid, withdraw Israeli forces from Gaza and release Palestinian tax funds held by Israel.

Abbas affirmed his readiness to work with Starmer towards a two-state solution based on international legitimacy, highlighting the importance of Britain recognising the State of Palestine.

Starmer reiterated the UK’s support for a ceasefire, humanitarian aid, and the release of hostages and Palestinian tax funds withheld by Israel.

He emphasised the significance of the Palestinian government’s reform programmes and expressed readiness to collaborate, noting that British Foreign Secretary David Lammy would soon visit Palestine for further discussions.
