IPOH, July 11 – The Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) successfully relocated a female elephant to the Royal Belum State Park, Gerik, today, after it was captured roaming in Kampung Lasah, Sungai Siput since early May.

Perak Perhilitan director Yusoff Shariff said the five-year-old mammal, weighing 1.1 tonnes and named ‘Yong Manis’, was captured on July 6 and is believed to have originated from the Piah Forest Reserve.

“The operation to relocate Yong Manis to the Royal Belum State Park took about three hours by 26 personnel from Perak Perhilitan and the National Elephant Conservation Centre in Kuala Gandah.

“We received complaints about an elephant encroaching the village area since early May, not only destroying durian plants but also most of the villagers’ oil palm and rubber trees,” he said when contacted by Bernama.
