BINTULU, Sept 24 – The Sarawak government will review the development of the port area here with the advisory services of Surbana Jurong, a Singapore-based port development firm.

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the company had vast experience in developing major ports in Singapore, and its expertise would be utilised in the second phase of port development here.

“They will plan for us to develop the Second Phase of Bintulu Samalaju Port under Bintulu Port Holdings, which will have a significant and positive impact on the local community,” he said during a press conference after the launch of the Borneo Oil & Gas Supply Base on Monday.

He said the port development review required a new approach, in line with industrial activities in the area and to further enhance the services provided by Bintulu Port Holdings based on the green port concept.

“Our steps are, first, to identify new industries, second, to identify new trends towards green activities, and Bintulu Port Holdings has already been recognised as a green port.

“Thirdly, the new industries require clean energy, and gas is one of the cleanest fossil fuels. However, we also have hydrogen, which can be broken down to produce green energy,” he said.

Abang Johari added that the oil and gas supply base, which was launched today, would serve as a hub for Bintulu Port’s management, providing essential materials for oil and gas industry activities.
