KANGAR, Oct 17 – The existing Pre-Marital Course module needs improvement to include ‘nafkah’ or financial support as part of family obligations, along with the legal consequences of failing to fulfil such commitments, said Raja Muda of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail.

He highlighted the need for the course to provide a clear explanation of the legal implications of neglecting nafkah payments.

Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra said that neglecting nafkah responsibilities was a contributing factor to the breakdown of family institutions, which would indirectly have a negative impact on society and the nation.

“In this regard, I urge the relevant government, private, and religious agencies to increase initiatives that can promote family love and foster a sense of responsibility within households, particularly in providing sufficient nafkah,” he said.

The Raja Muda of Perlis said this while officiating the 2024 Legal Literacy Carnival of the Family Support Division (BSK) organised by the Syariah Judiciary Department in collaboration with with the Perlis State  Syariah Judiciary Department on Thursday. Also present Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli.

Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra said Islam has established strong foundations for forming family institutions, emphasising the importance of responsibility, particularly regarding the provision of sufficient nafkah.

Meanwhile, the Raja Muda of Perlis said that the trial of nafkah claims should be given priority and handled swiftly, urging syarie judges, lawyers, and BSK officials to pay close attention to the matter.

In addition, he said that the nafkah orders issued by the Syariah Court should be clear and practical, taking into account existing legal provisions as income deduction orders and similar instruments.
