KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 – The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) will maintain its positions in southern Lebanon, despite facing significant challenges and pressures, according to its Head of Mission and Force Commander, Aroldo Lázaro.

His comments, shared in a posting on X, come amidst heightened tensions and nearby fighting that have tested the resolve of peacekeeping forces in the area.

During a visit to two Irish battalion positions, which have witnessed intense clashes in recent days, Lázaro praised the dedication and resilience of the peacekeepers. He noted that their high morale and unwavering commitment to fulfilling UNIFIL’s mandate are crucial to sustaining peace in the region.

“Peacekeepers remain in all positions in south Lebanon, despite enormous challenges and pressures,” Lázaro stated. “I am deeply proud of their high morale and commitment to UNIFIL’s mandate.”

The presence of UNIFIL, established in 1978, aims to monitor the cessation of hostilities and support the Lebanese government in maintaining stability in the area.
