KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — The Home Ministry has cleared the backlog of 19,205 permanent residency (PR) entry permit applications accumulated between 2013 and 2023, said its Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
He said the process was completed by a special task force under the Immigration Department, which approved 15,081 applications while rejecting 4,124.
He said a total of 2,575 applications were recorded in 2024, all of which are expected to be resolved within this month.
“As of June this year, we received 1,900 applications, and I have instructed officers at the Home Ministry and the National Registration Department (NRD) to complete all of them by September,” he said.
“This enables us to process an average of 300 new entry permit applications per month,” he said during the question-and-answer session at the Dewan Rakyat today.
He was responding to an oral question from Tan Hong Pin (PH-Bakri), who asked about the government’s progress in clearing the remaining 11,000 PR applications by June, as well as short-term measures for unsuccessful applicants.
