MOSCOW, Oct. 30 – Botswana is holding a general election on Wednesday to decide if the ruling Botswana Democratic Party will extend its 58-year span in power, reported Sputnik.
Under the diamond-rich African country’s electoral law, voters first elect members of parliament, who then elect the president.
Incumbent President Mokgweetsi Masisi, who is seeking a second term, has focused his campaign around a new 10-year deal that his government secured with global diamond giant De Beers earlier this year.
The 63-year-old will be running against three other candidates representing the left-wing Umbrella for Democratic Change coalition, the centre-left Botswana Congress Party, and the populist Botswana Patriotic Front.
