10-minute Pickup Time at KLIA Comes Into Effect

SHAH ALAM, Dec 1 — The Vehicle Access Management System (VAMS) at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) arrivals/departure halls was activated today to manage curbside traffic and ensure better access at the terminal.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) in a statement said it is free for drivers who drop off or pick up their passengers within 10 minutes, while anyone who exceeds 10 minutes will be subject to a penalty charge.

The charges are as follows:

  • 10.01-15 minutes: RM10
  • 15.01-20 minutes: RM30
  • 20.01-25 minutes: RM60
  • 25.01-30 minutes: RM100

According to MAHB, the VAMS employs automatic licence plate reading technology to track waiting times for each vehicle.

“A 10-minute grace period is allocated to quickly drop off or pick up passengers. A digital screen will display the licence plate numbers of vehicles that exceed that limit.

“Upon exiting, the system calculates the time spent in the area automatically, and a penalty of up to RM100 will be imposed if it goes over the limit.

“Payment can be made via Touch ‘n Go, credit card, or MyDebit,” it said.

MAHB explained that the system aims to expedite curbside traffic, reduce congestion, prevent taxi touting activities, and improve safety at the terminal.

“The trial phase revealed a clear change in drivers’ actions, when the amount of vehicles who exceeded the 10-minute limit declined from 50 per cent to 21 per cent over three months.

“It reflects high user cooperation and significant reduction in congestion. Data from the trial also confirmed the need to shift to full enforcement in phases,” read the statement.

Meanwhile, MAHB managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said data from the trial showed the curbside area became more manageable when drivers adhered to the 10-minute limit.

“With full enforcement from December 1 at Terminal 1, we will ensure access to the terminal is more orderly and all users get equal opportunities to use drop-off and pick-up lanes more efficiently.

“This consistency is important during the year-end peak travel season and ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026),” Izani said.
