Bangkok Shooting Claims Six Lives Near Chatuchak Market

BANGKOK, July 28 — Six people, including four security guards, were killed in a mass shooting on Monday afternoon near the Chatuchak Weekend Market here.

The attack occurred around 12.30 pm local time at the popular Or Tor Kor fresh food market. The assailant, wearing a black T-shirt and military-style shorts and carrying a backpack, was believed to have used a handgun to open fire on others.

Commissioner-General of the Royal Thai Police, Pol Gen Kitrat Phanphet, confirmed the case and said the assailant was male and had used the handgun to take his own life at the scene.

“Police officers are currently working to identify the individual and determine the motive behind the attack,” he said in a brief statement on Monday.

Kitrat also instructed the Metropolitan Police Bureau to urgently carry out a comprehensive investigation, gather as much evidence as possible, and examine CCTV footage to uncover the facts and swiftly solve the case.

The Bangkok Emergency Medical Centre, commonly known as the Erawan Centre, confirmed that the casualties comprised four security personnel, one woman, and the assailant himself.
