PHNOM PENH, Feb 1 — Cambodia has arrested 2,044 foreigners in its latest crackdown on online scams, according to its Interior Ministry.
Xinhua reported that the suspects, of eight nationalities, were apprehended during a raid on a casino comprising 22 buildings in Bavet City, southeastern Svay Rieng province, which borders Vietnam, yesterday.
“This truly reflects that the Cambodian government will never loosen its crackdown on online scam criminals,” ministry spokesman Touch Sokhak said in a news release today.
He added that Cambodia is “not a safe haven, but a hell for criminals.”
The Southeast Asian country has launched an unprecedented nationwide crackdown on cyber scam networks, aiming at maintaining and protecting security, public order, and social safety.
According to a report from Cambodia’s Ad-Hoc Committee to Combat Online Scams last week, the kingdom arrested 5,106 suspects for online scams from 23 nationalities over the last seven months, and 4,534 were deported to their countries of origin.
