ECRL Project Strengthens Malaysia-China Cooperation – Chief Secretary to Govt

KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 – The commitment of China Communications Construction Company Ltd (CCCC) in completing the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project has strengthened strategic Malaysia-China cooperation in the development of high-impact infrastructure.

Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said the project is on a solid track for completion in December 2026, with full operations expected to begin on Jan 1, 2027.

“This afternoon, I received a courtesy call from Wang Tongzhou, chairman of CCCC, following the ASEAN Summit.

“We discussed the progress of the ECRL project, which had reached 82.45 per cent as of April 2025. Also discussed in the meeting was the readiness of ECRL Operation Sdn Bhd for the operational and maintenance phase,” he said in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

The 665-kilometre ECRL project spans the east coast states of Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang, before connecting Selangor on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
