Minor Quake Strikes off Batu Pahat, Johor, MetMalaysia Says Tremors May Have Been Felt

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 27 — A minor earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale occurred off the waters of Batu Pahat, Johor, at 9.04am today, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said.

In a statement, the department said the quake’s epicentre was located at latitude 1.7° North and longitude 103.1° East, about 25km southeast of Batu Pahat, at a depth of 10km.

“Tremors may have been felt in areas around Batu Pahat,” it said.

MetMalaysia added that it would continue to monitor the situation closely.

Today’s tremor follows a series of minor quakes reported in Johor since late August, which have been linked by experts to the Mersing Fault Zone.

Although the quakes have been mild, residents in several districts — including Segamat, Yong Peng and Kluang — had previously reported feeling the ground shake.

Authorities have so far reported no damage or casualties from these incidents, but the department has advised the public to remain calm and rely on official channels for information. – Malay Mail
