Squid Jigging Frenzy at Pantai Seberang Marang

MARANG, April 11 — Locals and visitors flock to Pantai Seberang Marang here to cast nets and jigging lines into the surf for a thrill of squid hunting right off the beach.

Food vendor Azharuddin Mohd, 48, said squid are unusually plentiful along the shore this season compared to previous years, drawing families from Marang, Kuala Terengganu and Kuala Nerus to jig them along the shore.

“This year’s vibe at Pantai Seberang Marang is electric, with crowds jostling for extra squid, which is something we rarely saw before.

“People usually just net fish, but this year it’s mostly squid and some white prawns too. Jigging right from the beach is what Terengganu folks call candat darat,” he told reporters at the beach today.

Meanwhile, resident Zulkifli Abdullah, 63, said crowds flood Pantai Seberang Marang for jigging and netting from dusk until midnight, using all sorts of bait.

“I’m also wondering why there are so many squid washing up on the beach this year. I noticed they started showing up in droves right after Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

“Some folks are hauling in 2 kg, others up to 20 kg. Sometimes just two squids… it all depends on your luck, skill, and the bait you use,” said the man, who has been a fisherman for over 50 years.
