Trump Lauds Manet for Successful Ceasefire Talks in Malaysia

PHNOM PENH, July 29 — United States (US) President Donald Trump has congratulated Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet for successfully negotiating ceasefire talks with Thailand on Monday.

During the Thailand-Cambodia special meeting held in Putrajaya, Malaysia, both parties agreed to cease hostilities along the northern Cambodian border.

As of midnight, there were no shootings taking place in the hostile regions.

“Upon returning to Cambodia after successful ceasefire negotiations between the Cambodian army and Thai army in Malaysia, I received a phone call from President Donald Trump directly to congratulate me on the successful end of the immediate ceasefire negotiations,” Hun Manet said in his Facebook page posting late Monday night.

He said Trump also agreed for the US to engage in the monitoring of the implementation of the ceasefire agreement and to continue cooperating with the mechanism established by Malaysia for successful oversight.

“He (Trump) believes that for this agreement to be fully and sustainably implemented, there must be a clear monitoring mechanism to oversee the implementation by the relevant parties,” said Manet.

Manet and his counterpart, acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, agreed to halt all fighting, putting an end to the armed clashes between their respective armies that began on July 24.

Manet thanked Trump in his social media posting for initiating and expediting the ceasefire negotiations and for having the US co-host the special meeting in Malaysia.
