Pulau Carey’s Transformation Likely to Start Next Year

SHAH ALAM, Dec 3 — The Ministry of Transport (MOT) is fine-tuning plans for the development of Port Klang’s Terminal 3 on Pulau Carey, with the first phase of the project expected to be implemented during the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) starting next year.

Minister Anthony Loke said the proposed development will be presented to the Cabinet once the Port Klang Terminal 3’s Development Planning Steering Committee (JPPC) finalises the implementation details.

He noted that the need to increase Port Klang’s future capacity has been identified, including the expansion of container terminals at West Port and the planning of a third terminal as a long-term measure.

“In principle, the Ministry of Transport has recognised the need to enhance Port Klang’s future capacity … and the planning of a third terminal on Carey Island as a long-term approach,” he said in a verbal reply in the Dewan Rakyat.

Containers continue to be loaded after sundown at Port Klang.

Loke was responding to a question from Dato’ Ahmad Yunus Hairi (Kuala Langat) regarding the development plans for Pulau Carey’s Terminal 3 under the 13MP and the estimated implementation timeline.

He explained that Pulau Carey was chosen as a suitable location for the new terminal due to its strategic position along the Strait of Malacca and its natural depth of 18 meters, allowing ultra-large cargo ships to dock.

He added that the first phase of development is expected to commence during the 13MP following the approval process. – Media Selangor
