KUCHING, Oct 20 – Sarawak has achieved another milestone in its pursuit to become a global leader in high-technology industries through a strategic partnership between SMD Semiconductor and South Korea’s Rebellions Inc.
According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) report, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the collaboration reflects international confidence in Sarawak’s capability as a trusted technology partner within the semiconductor and artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem.
“This partnership marks another success for SMD Semiconductor following its earlier collaboration with the United Kingdom on advanced sustainable semiconductor manufacturing, workforce training, and the development of next-generation technologies.
“This achievement has laid the foundation for Sarawak to align with Rebellions’ innovative High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and chip-led optimised dataflow architecture,” he said during a press conference after receiving a courtesy visit from Rebellions Inc founder and chief executive officer (CEO), Sung Hyun Park, at the Satria Pertiwi Complex here today.
The Premier explained that Rebellions Inc is a leading AI accelerator technology company with expertise in HBM, which enables the production of high-speed and energy-efficient chips.
He said that through this synergy, SMD Semiconductor and Rebellions Inc will collaborate on technology transfer, workforce training, and the development of high-performance chips for the regional market.
According to the Sarawak Premier, the collaboration aligns with the State’s vision to develop the ‘Integrated Longhouse Silicon Valley’ and supports the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which emphasises innovation- and technology-driven economic growth.
He also noted that over the next five to ten years, the aerospace sector will become a key area requiring a significant number of chips and digital communication systems in line with technological advancements and satellite functions.
He added that the ecosystem to be developed with support from Rebellions is expected to become a major catalyst in strengthening Sarawak’s position as a regional hub for high technology.
SMD Semiconductor and Rebellions Inc signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Wisma Bapa Malaysia, witnessed by SMD Semiconductor chairman, Dato Sri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar, and Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Economic Planning and Development), Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel.
The scope of the MoU also includes joint initiatives in data centre power management, industrial-scale AI application development, and collaborative training programmes with local universities, as well as exploring equity investment opportunities to pave the way for deeper technological cooperation.
Also present were SMD Semiconductor board members Datu John Wayne Chamberlain Sirau and Dato (Dr) Salihin Abang, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datu Adana Jed, and SMD Semiconductor CEO Shariman Jamil. — DayakDaily
