TNB Offers Commercial Consumers Incentive to Put Up Merdeka Lights

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 25 — Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) is continuing its tradition of enlivening the National Day by offering the Sinaran Merdeka Incentive 2025, allowing commercial customers to reduce the cost of decorative lighting during the celebration.

Introduced in 2000, the incentive continues to receive strong support, with 1,027 applications recorded as of August 15, from 1,863 applications last year.

According to TNB, the initiative has consistently drawn participation from commercial customers, who view it not only as a cost-saving measure but also as a way to contribute to the Merdeka spirit through creative lighting displays.

“We truly appreciate this initiative. Encouraging decorative lighting on buildings and surrounding areas creates a lively and patriotic atmosphere throughout the Merdeka season,” said Lalaport Mall integrated facility manager Mohd Fizan Mat Nor in a statement issued by TNB.

The same sentiment was echoed by Sungei Wang Plaza deputy general manager Abdul Hadi Ali.

“As a shopping mall in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, we are proud to be part of the Sinaran Merdeka Programme, as it reflects our love for the nation while fulfilling our corporate social responsibility,” he said.

Building on this positive response, TNB has enhanced the Sinaran Merdeka Incentive for 2025 in line with the electricity tariff restructuring, which took effect last July 1.

This year, specific rates are introduced for non-domestic low-voltage and medium-voltage customers engaged in commercial activities, such as managing skyscrapers, office towers, commercial complexes, shopping malls, hotels and petrol stations.

Eligible applicants are customers under the general tariff and time-of-use categories who applied for electricity supply before August 1, 2024, with at least one actual bill issued in May, June or July this year.

The incentive, which runs from August 1 to September 30, is set at 28.91 sen/kWh (low voltage) and 13.37 sen/kWh (medium voltage), representing reductions of 57 per cent and 45 per cent respectively from the normal rates.

The calculation is based on additional electricity consumption compared with the average usage in May, June and July, with rebates reflected in the October bill as a one-off entry under the description “Sinaran Merdeka Incentive”.

Applications are open until September 15 via the myTNB portal or at any Kedai Tenaga, while more information can be obtained via the TNB CareLine at 1-300-88-5454 or email at tnbcareline@tnb.com.my.
