KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 – The government has ordered an immediate tightening of security measures at liquefied natural gas facilities in Bintulu, Sarawak, following reports of a potential security threat.
The National Security Council (MKN) today confirmed that it had received information on the matter, and directed all operators in the area to step up safety protocols while investigations are carried out.
“The government, through MKN, has instructed all LNG facilities in Bintulu to enhance security controls immediately on a temporary basis,” it said in a statement.
“This is to enable security forces and the relevant authorities to conduct immediate investigations into the threat.”
The council also urged the public not to speculate on the matter, assuring that updates on the situation would be released in due course.
It said national security agencies remained on alert and have put in place control measures to address the threat.
Bintulu is home to one of the world’s largest LNG production hubs and serves as a key contributor to Malaysia’s energy exports.
