KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 26 — Police took less than 24 hours to arrest the suspects who fired shots at the vehicle of SAC Mohd Nasaruddin Mohd Nasir, the commander of the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) in Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah, yesterday, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the suspects are currently being questioned.
“This is an incident we deeply regret. However, we are grateful that the MCBA commander was unharmed when he left early in the morning for Subuh prayers. The shots hit only his vehicle,” he said.
Saifuddin said this in reply to a supplementary question from Datuk Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff (PN-Rantau Panjang) regarding the safety of enforcement officers at the border following the shooting.
Yesterday, a Proton X70 driven by Mohd Nasaruddin was fired upon at about 5.40 am at the slip road leading to Masjid Al-Muhajirin in Bukit Kayu Hitam, around one kilometre from the Malaysia-Thailand border.
Two suspects on a motorcycle reportedly discharged two rounds, believed to have been fired from a semi-automatic weapon, at the victim’s vehicle.
Saifuddin said the government would not compromise on any form of security threat along the nation’s borders.
He stressed that safeguarding border security remains a top priority, as agencies stationed at entry points face a range of threats, including cross-border crime, arms and drug smuggling, human trafficking and organised crime.
