Strong Tremors Felt in Bangkok, Locals Share Videos

The Greater Bangkok area, home to over 17 million people, includes many residents living in high-rise buildings. When the earthquake struck around 1:30 p.m., alarms rang throughout the buildings, prompting startled residents to evacuate down staircases of condominiums and hotels in the densely populated heart of Bangkok.

After the tremor, people gathered in the streets, seeking shelter from the intense midday heat. The quake was powerful enough to cause water to spill out of pools, even in high-rise buildings, as the tremor rattled through.

Some monasteries collapsed, and frightening images have surfaced online.

While there has been a lot of damage of property, no injuries or loss of life has been reported so far.
