KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 (Bernama) — United States (US) Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi sat down for a rare high-level meeting on the sidelines of the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here Friday.
The meeting, which took place from 3.23 pm to 4.23 pm, drew media attention both locally and internationally, given the current geopolitical climate and heightened interest in US-China relations.
It marked the first in-person meeting between the two leaders since Rubio took office in January.
Following the dialogue with Wang Yi, Rubio proceeded to another bilateral session with Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Bui Thanh Son.
The meeting between Rubio and Wang Yi was among the few high-level engagements between the two countries this year and is seen as a positive signal in efforts to promote communication and avoid further tensions, particularly in areas related to trade, tariffs and regional economic stability.
Malaysia, as Chair of ASEAN in 2025, is hosting a series of meetings that have become a key neutral platform for dialogue among global powers amid ongoing regional and international challenges.
