Thai PM Anutin Affirms Intention to Dissolve Parliament in January

BANGKOK, Sept 25 — Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul yesterday affirmed that he plans to dissolve parliament by the end of January, cueing up a snap general election in March or early April.

Earlier this month, Anutin, the head of the conservative Bhumjaithai party, won a parliamentary vote to succeed Paetongtarn Shinawatra as prime minister, after her removal form office by the Constitutional Court.

Anutin won the vote with the support of the progressive People’s Party (PP), which, unable to put forward a candidate of its own, promised to support any prime ministerial candidate that was willing to dissolve parliament and call a snap election.

Anutin’s comments came as he and his new cabinet took a royal oath at Government House in Bangkok yesterday, after which he outlined to reporters his priorities for his limited time in office. – The Diplomat
