Wear Batik Daily, Govt Urges Civil Servants

SHAH ALAM, April 7 — Civil servants have been encouraged to wear batik every day, following a recent Cabinet decision to set the air-conditioner thermostat limits to 24ºC in government offices as an energy-saving measure.

In a circular dated yesterday, Public Service Department (JPA) director-general Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz said the move is in line with the existing dress code — Section UP.7.2.3 of the Public Service Human Resource Circular.

“Under Section UP.7.2.3 … wearing batik is mandatory every Thursday and encouraged on every working day as an alternative to office attire,” the statement read.

“Heads of department may also allow officers to wear corporate or field-work attire on certain days for specific purposes while carrying out their duties.

“Following a Cabinet decision on April 1 that set the minimum air-conditioning temperature in government offices at 24ºC as part of energy-saving measures, civil servants are encouraged to wear batik daily as provided under this circular,” he said.

Dahlan added that officers are permitted to wear corporate shirts every day except Thursdays.

The directive, however, does not apply to officers required to wear official uniforms and is subject to approval by authorities.

Dahlan said the circular extends to state public services, statutory bodies and local authorities. – Media Selangor
