In recent years, China has been actively advancing agricultural and rural modernization. Rongchang District of Chongqing has made enhancing comprehensive agricultural production capacity a key task. From November 19th to 21st, 2025, the 11th China Animal Husbandry Science and Technology Forum was successfully held in Rongchang. As the fixed host site for this forum, Rongchang boasts several national-level platforms, including the China Swine Technology Innovation Center and the China National Big Data Center for Swine, providing robust support for the integration of animal husbandry technology and industry.
Building platforms to empower industrial development
Since 2004, the China Animal Husbandry Science and Technology Forum has been held consecutively in Rongchang for 11 sessions. It has evolved from an industry academic exchange event into a comprehensive platform integrating academic discussion, technology promotion, industry docking, and talent aggregation. To date, the forum has cumulatively promoted the completion of over 2,000 scientific research projects, yielded more than 200 scientific and technological progress awards, obtained over 300 patents, and led to the establishment of the Chongmu Silicon Valley （重牧硅谷）Technology Business Incubator, building a collaborative network for the animal husbandry industry that radiates across China.
This year’s forum highlighted four key features: First, focusing on food security and technological self-reliance, providing intellectual support for the development of the animal husbandry industry. Second, emphasizing its role as a source of innovation, exploring pathways for smart animal husbandry and green technologies. Third, prioritizing cross-sector collaboration, launching the National Animal Husbandry Industry Technology Trading Market. Fourth, aligning with development needs, releasing industry initiative documents and technical book series, and hosting special events like skills competitions.
Improve the industrial ecosystem led by technology
Rongchang’s ability to continuously host the national-level Animal Husbandry Science and Technology Forum stems from its consistent focus on the exploration and application of animal husbandry technology.
At the Qijin（琪金） • Rongchang Pig Genetic Resource Conservation Farm, intelligent equipment monitors environmental parameters and livestock health in real-time. In Huangni Village, Zhisheng Town, intelligent pig houses enhance breeding efficiency through IoT technology, coupled with the development of eco-circular agriculture. The “Shuangchang（双昌）” Cooperation Demonstration Park has built Chongqing’s first “Future Pig Farm”, achieving full-process data management.
Furthermore, Rongchang has constructed a complete industrial ecosystem for animal husbandry: In scientific research, it relies on universities, research institutes, and tech companies to promote technology application. In breeding, it has established a three-tier protection system of “gene bank + conservation farm + protection area”. In processing, it has developed over 20 types of deep-processed products. In sales, it utilizes an “Industrial Brain + E-commerce Platform” to enable direct supply of products nationwide.
Currently, Rongchang has formed a “1+2+N” industrial structure, led by the Rongchang Pig, supported by white geese and apiculture, and supplemented by layer hens, herbivorous livestock, and others. The district hosts 1 livestock and poultry gene bank, 3 protection areas at various levels, 14 breeding livestock and poultry farms, 9 slaughtering and processing enterprises, 5 agricultural equipment enterprises, 45 feed enterprises, and 14 veterinary drug enterprises, with products exported to over 20 countries and regions.
Innovation-driven and promote green development
Rongchang has a profound foundation in animal husbandry. Among its assets, the “Rongchang Pig”, one of China’s three major excellent pig breeds, has a breeding history exceeding 1,800 years and a documented breed history of 456 years. By 2025, its brand value had reached 5.595 billion yuan. As the location of the National Animal Husbandry Science and Technology City and the permanent venue for the China Animal Husbandry Science and Technology Forum, Rongchang aims to promote high-quality industrial development. It has established eight major systems encompassing breeding innovation, smart farming, new business entity cultivation, industrial chain collaboration, technology R&D, disease prevention and control, and green development, injecting systematic support for modern animal husbandry.
In empowering the domestic and international animal husbandry industry, Rongchang has built professional and efficient platforms for kinetic energy conversion by hosting events like the China Animal Husbandry Science and Technology Forum and the International Symposium on Animal Environment and Welfare Farming. It has successfully hosted international seminars for the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, contributing “Chinese Wisdom” and the “Rongchang Solution” to global animal husbandry development.
Regarding scenario innovation and platform construction, Rongchang has gathered 10 national-level and 86 municipal-level scientific innovation platforms, achieved over 100 scientific research results, and formed a “1+4+N” spatial layout comprising “1 concentrated development zone + 4 agricultural and animal husbandry demonstration parks + N breeding farms and stations”. It is progressively building a complete and comprehensive industrial ecosystem for animal husbandry with all essential elements and complete chains.
From platform building and technology R&D to model innovation, Rongchang has gradually formed a distinctive local pathway for the development of the animal husbandry industry, providing replicable practical cases for the transformation and upgrading of China’s animal husbandry sector. In the future, Rongchang will continue to be driven by technology, deepen the application of smart farming technologies, integrate industrial resources, and further cultivate new quality productive forces in the agricultural sector.
