ISTANBUL, Aug 2 – Indonesia’s Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano erupted on Friday, spewing ash up to nearly 10 kilometres from its summit, according to the Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported.
The column’s height from sea level was over 11.5 kilometres. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
Authorities warned locals and tourists to stay at least six to seven kilometres away from the volcano.
At least nine people were killed and dozens injured following an eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki last November.
The 1,584-metre (5,197-foot) mountain also erupted in March and July but caused no casualties.
It is a twin volcano located alongside Mount Lewotobi Perempuan in the Flores Timur district.
Indonesia has 120 active volcanoes and sits along the “Ring of Fire,” a string of seismic fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.
