TEHRAN, March 5 — Iran’s foreign minister threatened the United States following the sinking of an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean, calling the attack an “atrocity”, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
“The US has perpetrated an atrocity at sea, 2,000 miles away from Iran’s shores,” Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote on the social media platform X on Thursday.
“Mark my words: The US will come to bitterly regret precedent it has set.”
Araghchi said the frigate IRIS Dena, carrying 130 crew members, had been sailing in international waters as a guest of the Indian navy when it was attacked without warning.
The US Defence Department said the vessel was sunk on Wednesday by a torpedo fired from a US submarine, describing it as the first attack of its kind since World War II.
Sri Lanka, which carried out rescue operations, confirmed after the attack that at least 80 crew members were killed. Dozens of others remain missing.
The Sri Lankan government had earlier said at least 180 people were on board the IRIS Dena.
