HANOI, Aug 20 (VNA) — A total of 55 political parties have registered to participate in Myanmar’s upcoming general election, nine of which are expected to compete nationwide, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported, citing state-run Myanmar Radio and Television (MRTV).
MRTV earlier cited an announcement from Myanmar’s Union Election Commission stating that the country plans to launch the first phase of the general election on Dec 28, outlining a roadmap for the first vote in nearly five years.
The election will be conducted in multiple phases, but specific dates for subsequent phases have not yet been determined and will be announced later, depending on the security situation.
In June, the state-run daily The Global New Light of Myanmar quoted military government leader Min Aung Hlaing as saying that the general election will be held between December 2025 and January 2026.
