new york, SEPT 6 – The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on strengthening cooperation between the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on Friday.
The draft resolution was jointly proposed by China and other countries.
The resolution acknowledges the constructive role of the SCO in ensuring peace and sustainable development, promoting regional cooperation, and enhancing good-neighborly relations and mutual trust. It emphasizes the importance of strengthening dialogue, cooperation and coordination between the United Nations system and the SCO.
The resolution proposes that the UN secretary-general maintain regular consultations with the SCO secretary-general through existing inter-agency forums and mechanisms, including high-level interactive dialogues between the UN secretary-general and the heads of regional and other organizations. It also recommends that specialized agencies, organizations, programs and funds within the UN system collaborate with the SCO to jointly implement relevant programs aimed at achieving shared objectives.
