KUALA LUMPUR, April 189— Former UMNO Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said that he returned to the party not with any demands, but rather with the determination to serve and contribute as best he could to strengthen the party.
In fact, the ex-Rembau MP said he is ready to work with all levels of leadership and the grassroots to restore the people’s confidence in the party.
“Hopefully this decision will be a new starting point for us to move forward with greater unity, maturity and credibility,” he said in a Facebook post.
Khairy’s remarks come after the UMNO Supreme Council meeting’s decision last night, which readmitted more than 6,000 members, including several former senior party leaders, such as former vice president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and former foreign minister Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar.
In 2023, UMNO sacked Khairy and its Supreme Council member Tan Sri Noh Omar while several other leaders, including Hishammuddin, were suspended from their membership for six years.
However, last month, he expressed his intention to rejoin the party following the announcement by its president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi that he was “opening the door wide” to former members who had been sacked or suspended.
Khairy said he expressed his highest appreciation and gratitude to Zahid for the wisdom and consideration given in accepting his application to return as a party member.
He also expressed his gratitude to all UMNO Supreme Council members who had made the decision with wisdom and conviction for the future of the party’s struggle.
“I accept this decision with great humility and gratitude, and am aware of the great trust that comes with it.
“The period outside the party has given me space to reflect and improve my weaknesses,” Khairy said.
