PUTRAJAYA, June 8 — The Foreign Ministry has confirmed that all 59 Malaysian nationals registered with the Consulate General of Malaysia in Davao City, Philippines, are currently safe following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck southern Mindanao at 7.37 am on Monday.
The ministry also known as Wisma Putra in its media advisory said the Consulate General of Malaysia in Davao City had successfully established contact with Malaysian nationals residing in General Santos City, confirming that they are currently safe.
“At present, there are 59 Malaysian nationals officially registered with the Consulate General in Davao City. The Consulate General remains in close contact with the relevant Philippine authorities to closely monitor the safety of the wider Malaysian community in the region,” the statement stated.
According to the statement, Malaysians residing in or travelling to the affected regions are strongly advised to remain vigilant, move to higher ground immediately if located near the coast, and strictly follow all safety and evacuation directives issued by the Philippine authorities.
The Foreign Ministry, through the Consulate General of Malaysia in Davao City and the Embassy of Malaysia in Manila, is continuously monitoring the developments. Local authorities have issued a tsunami warning and reported ongoing aftershocks across the affected areas.
The statement said in response to the disaster, authorities in Davao City have mandated the closure of all schools and government offices. Furthermore, reports indicate that multiple buildings in General Santos City have sustained significant structural damage, including the collapse of several structures.
Additionally, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has announced the cancellation of multiple domestic flights, particularly involving routes to and from General Santos, Manila, Cebu, and Iloilo, as authorities conduct safety assessments at affected airports.
“Malaysians whose travel plans are impacted by these disruptions are advised to coordinate directly with their respective airlines for flight updates and rebooking arrangements,” the statement said.
According to Wisma Putra, to facilitate timely communication and consular assistance, Malaysians are urged to register and regularly update their contact details via the e-Konsular portal at https://ekonsular.kln.gov.my
