KATHNABDU, Sept 2 – The second batch of Chinese emergency disaster relief supplies arrived in Kathmandu on Tuesday afternoon, delivered by a Chinese Air Force Y-20 transport plane as heavy rain swept the Nepali capital.
The cargo plane touched down at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport at around 5:30 p.m. A handover ceremony was held there, attended by Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Zhang Maoming, Nepal’s Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Mahabir Pun and other officials from both sides.
The shipment has been tailored to Nepal’s most pressing relief needs, and includes drones, DNA testing equipment and reagents, water purification systems and emergency lighting gear to support recovery efforts.
A team of five Chinese DNA identification specialists also arrived aboard the military aircraft, making them the third group of Chinese aid experts sent to Nepal. The team will head straight to disaster-hit areas to help local authorities with on-site relief work.
As the disaster enters its seventh day, priorities have shifted from emergency search-and-rescue and temporary resettlement to logistics, victim identification, and systematic post-disaster support and reconstruction.
Nepal Police said in a social media post on Tuesday that 1,068 bodies had been recovered from areas hit by floods and landslides across the country, with 4,606 people still missing as of 5 p.m. local time, Xinhua News Agency reported.
