Hong Kong to Set Up Independent Judge-chaired Commission For Fire Cause Investigation

HONG KONG, Dec 2 – Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Chief Executive John Lee said on Tuesday that the HKSAR government will set up an independent commission led by a judge to investigate the cause of the deadly fire in Tai Po’s Wang Fuk Court.

Lee made the remarks when meeting the media before the Executive Council meeting.

Lee said that the relief fund for residents affected by the fire has reached about 1.6 billion Hong Kong dollars(about $205 million). The independent commission will conduct a thorough probe into the cause of the incident and submit recommendations and a report to the chief executive.

At a press conference on Monday afternoon, the HKSAR government said that as of 4 p.m., the fire had left 151 people dead, with more than 30 others still missing.
