ISLAMABAD, Oct 4 — Pakistan will export an additional 70,000 tonnes of rice to Malaysia from October to December 2026, following diplomatic and commercial efforts undertaken at the behest of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The Prime Minister’s Office said the new rice export order is significant for Pakistan’s farming sector.
“Securing the additional export of 70,000 metric tonnes of Pakistani rice is the result of effective diplomatic and commercial efforts on the directives of the Prime Minister,” it said in a statement yesterday.
Shehbaz added that increasing access to global markets for Pakistani agricultural commodities is his government’s top priority.
Pakistan, a major producer of premium and extra-long grain aromatic basmati rice, has identified Malaysia as a key potential growth market for commodity trade.
A Pakistan delegation, which included National Food Security Ministry’s secretary Amer Ali Ahmed, Commerce Ministry secretary Jawad Paul, and representatives of the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan, participated in the recent Malaysia International Halal Showcase trade fair in Kuala Lumpur and discussed rice trade with top Padiberas Nasional Berhad executives.
Pakistan is also working to expand its meat exports to Malaysia.
