NAGOYA, Oct 5 — National track cycling ace Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang continues to enjoy the confidence of the National Sports Council (NSC), having been included in the “Olympic Pathway” programme in preparation for the Los Angeles 2028 (LA28) Olympic Games.
NSC director-general Jefri Ngadirin said Azizulhasni is among the athletes identified for focused attention under the programme, with specific plans to be implemented in collaboration with the relevant national sports associations.
“Azizul is one of the athletes who has already been classified and earmarked for the Olympic Pathway,” he told a press conference on the Malaysian contingent’s performance at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games here yesterday.
Jefri said the NSC had previously held discussions with the relevant sports associations to ensure that each sport has a specific programme to prepare athletes for the LA28 Olympics.
“Each of the sports mentioned has its own programme to ensure that they can compete and contribute medals at LA28,” he said.
Meanwhile, Jefri congratulated “The Pocket Rocketman” on winning the gold medal in the keirin event at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games.
He said that, apart from Azizulhasni, Malaysia also has squash players with the potential to contribute gold medals at the upcoming Olympic Games.
“Let us not forget that we have two qualifiers from squash who also have the potential to contribute gold medals at the Olympic Games,” he said.
Azizulhasni, 38, won gold in the keirin and bronze in the sprint at Aichi-Nagoya 2026, bringing his Asian Games career tally to three gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
His success in Aichi-Nagoya further strengthens his position as one of Malaysia’s key prospects in the country’s pursuit of success at the LA28 Olympics.
