NEW DELHI, Sept 13 — BRICS leaders condemned violations of Lebanon’s sovereignty and called on Israel to withdraw its troops from occupied Lebanese territories, while also reaffirming their commitment to Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, according to a joint statement issued on Saturday, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
“We condemn the continued violations of the ceasefire and of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon. We call on Israel to respect the terms agreed with the Lebanese government and to withdraw its occupying forces from all Lebanese territories in which they remain,” the joint statement issued at the summit in New Delhi said.
BRICS leaders also expressed their “commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Syria”.
“We urge Syria to firmly oppose all forms of terrorism and extremism and take concrete actions to respond to concerns of the international community about terrorism. We further reaffirm the necessity of the withdrawal of occupying forces from Syria,” the statement said.
The 18th BRICS summit is being held on Sept 12-13 in New Delhi.
India is holding this year’s rotating BRICS chairmanship.
