Malaysia Elected to UN ECOSOC For 2027-2029 Term

PUTRAJAYA, June 5 — Malaysia has been elected as a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the term 2027-2029, during the elections held at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly on June 4.

The Foreign Ministry said Malaysia secured 184 out of 186 votes from member states present and voting, securing the highest vote count. The strong mandate reflects the international community’s confidence in Malaysia’s continued commitment to multilateralism, sustainable development and cooperation.

“As a member of ECOSOC, Malaysia will continue to contribute to the Council’s work by advocating the interests of developing countries and working constructively with all stakeholders to advance balanced, inclusive and sustainable development,” the ministry, widely known as Wisma Putra, said in a statement on Friday.

Wisma Putra said Malaysia will focus on addressing multifaceted global challenges such as economic uncertainty, humanitarian crises, inequality and the adverse impacts of climate change.

Other priorities include poverty eradication, financing for development, reform of the international architecture, food security, youth empowerment, quality education, affordable healthcare, and the well-being of vulnerable communities.

As one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, ECOSOC serves as the central platform for coordinating the economic, social and related work of the UN system and its specialised agencies.

“In today’s challenging global landscape, the role of ECOSOC is more critical than ever in advancing international efforts to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals and ensuring that no one is left behind,” it said.

Malaysia has previously served seven terms on ECOSOC, covering the periods 1971-1973, 1976-1978, 1983-1985, 1991-1993, 1995-1997, 2003-2005 and 2008-2010.
