Malaysia, Tamil Nadu Eye Cooperation in Archives, Heritage Documentation

KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 — Malaysia and the Indian state of Tamil Nadu have the potential to strengthen cooperation in archives, history and heritage documentation through knowledge exchange and cross-cultural ties.

Deputy National Unity Minister Yuneswaran Ramaraj said his recent working visit to the Tamil Nadu Archives and Historical Research in Egmore, Chennai, could open up more opportunities for collaboration, particularly in archives, history and heritage documentation.

He described the visit as a meaningful experience in understanding the role of archives as centres of knowledge, national memory and repositories of a community’s heritage.

“The role of archives is crucial in preserving national records, official government documents and written heritage as references for present and future generations.

“Archives are not old or boring places, but centres of knowledge that help us understand the origins, culture, language and identity of a community,” he said in a statement.

Yuneswaran also encouraged young people to view history not merely as stories of the past, but as guidance for building a future rooted in identity and cultural values.

The Tamil Nadu Archives and Historical Research houses historical records, government documents, manuscripts and research materials related to Tamil Nadu and the former Madras Presidency.
