KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 — The Kuala Lumpur Court Complex drew attention today as three former prime ministers — Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob — arrived to attend separate court proceedings.
Najib is scheduled to attend the hearing of a USD5.64 billion civil suit filed by 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and its subsidiaries against him and several other individuals.
The hearing before Judicial Commissioner Mohamad Redzuan Idrus is expected to continue with testimony from former 1MDB chief executive officer Datuk Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi.
The writ of summons alleges, among other things, that Najib committed breach of trust, breached statutory duties, abused his power and conspired to misappropriate 1MDB funds.
In a separate High Court proceeding, Muhyiddin, who faces seven charges, is scheduled to attend the hearing of his case involving charges of abuse of position and money laundering linked to the Jana Wibawa project.
Muhyiddin, who was prime minister and Bersatu president at the time of the alleged offences, faces four charges of using his position to obtain gratification totalling RM225.3 million for the party from four companies — Bukhary Equity Sdn Bhd, Nepturis Sdn Bhd, Mamfor Sdn Bhd and KCJ Engineering Sdn Bhd — as well as from Datuk Seri Azman Yusoff, in connection with the Jana Wibawa project.
The hearing before Judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin resumes today with the testimony of the 27th prosecution witness, KCJ Engineering Sdn Bhd director Datuk Seri Azman Yusoff.
Meanwhile, Ismail Sabri is expected to be charged in the Sessions Court under Section 36(2) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 in connection with the declaration of his assets.
He was initially scheduled to be charged on Aug 7, but the proceedings were postponed to today after he was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) due to health issues.
Judge Suzana then postponed the case to today after Ismail Sabri’s lawyer, Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad, sought an adjournment, saying his client was experiencing possible arrhythmia and was scheduled to undergo a pacemaker implantation procedure.
Ismail Sabri had been summoned several times previously to have his statement recorded in connection with the asset declaration submitted to the MACC.
The MACC also seized RM170 million in cash in various foreign currencies, along with 16 kilogrammes of pure gold bars estimated to be worth RM7 million, as part of its corruption and money laundering investigation involving him.
The seizures were made during searches of a residence and an office believed to have been used as “safe houses”, following investigations into four senior officials who served under Ismail Sabri and were detained in February 2025.
