Bursa Malaysia Ends Lower on Higher Oil Prices, Geopolitical Concerns

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 – Bursa Malaysia ended lower on Tuesday, as renewed gains in crude oil prices and persistent geopolitical concerns weighed on investor sentiment.

At 5 pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) eased 3.91 points, or 0.23 per cent, to 1,731.46 compared with yesterday’s close of 1,735.37.

The benchmark index opened 0.04 of a point higher at 1,735.41 and fluctuated between 1,725.48 and 1,738.21 throughout the day.

On the broader market, losers led gainers 581 to 562, while 585 counters were unchanged, 1,047 untraded and 13 suspended.

Turnover narrowed to 3.43 billion units valued at RM2.94 billion from 3.49 billion units valued at RM2.55 billion on Monday.  

IPPFA Sdn Bhd director of investment strategy and country economist Mohd Sedek Jantan said the standoff over the Strait of Hormuz showed little sign of resolution.

He told Bernama that oil prices extended their advance after a sharp jump in the previous session as investors continued to assess the risk of prolonged disruptions to global crude flows and uncertainty over when the critical waterway could fully reopen.

Among the heavyweights, Public Bank rose one sen to RM5.19. Maybank eased 10 sen to RM10.56, CIMB Group slipped three sen to RM7.89, and Tenaga Nasional eased six sen to RM14.34, while IHH Healthcare was flat at RM8.35.

On the most active list, Steel Hawk slid 1.5 sen to 11.5 sen, Zetrix AI gained one sen to 71.5 sen, HHRG was flat at 15 sen, Top Glove added three sen to 66 sen, while NationGate slipped four sen to RM1.50.

Among the top gainers, Nestle rose RM3.00 to RM102.60, Hong Leong Bank added 42 sen to RM22.74, SAM Engineering gained 25 sen to RM4.58, while Greatech Technology and KESM Industries both advanced 13 sen to RM2.74 and RM4.57, respectively.

Among the top losers, United Plantations shaved off 68 sen to RM33.20, Batu Kawan slipped 52 sen to RM20.88, Petronas Dagangan erased 34 sen to RM19.00, Kuala Lumpur Kepong declined 32 sen to RM21.52, and RHB Bank shed 15 sen to RM8.73.

Among the broader indices, the FBM ACE Index climbed 12.90 points to 5,169.22, the FBM Mid 70 Index advanced 24.54 points to 18,397.92, while the FBM Emas Index decreased 14.23 points to 12,854.23, the FBM Top 100 Index declined 17.03 points to 12,666.83, and the FBM Emas Shariah Index slipped 11.33 points to 12,704.18.

By sector, the Energy Index edged up 7.58 points to 773.22, while the Financial Services Index went down 45.25 points to 20,374.21, the Industrial Products and Services Index eased 0.19 of a point to 187.97, and the Plantation Index dipped 36.49 points to 9,484.00.

The Main Market volume slid to 1.61 billion units valued at RM2.59 billion compared to 1.76 billion units valued at RM2.21 billion on Monday. 

Warrants turnover expanded to 1.23 billion units worth RM157.60 million versus 1.12 billion units worth RM155.99 million previously.

The ACE Market volume shrank to 589.47 million units valued at RM184.37 million from 591.08 million units valued at RM193.20 million yesterday.

Consumer products and services counters accounted for 168.91 million shares traded on the Main Market, industrial products and services (308.38 million), construction (107.71 million), technology (336.27 million), financial services (58.55 million), property (151.94 million), plantation (36.49 million), real estate investment trusts (16.55 million), closed-end fund (129,300), energy (85.50 million), healthcare (137.37 million), telecommunications and media (64.80 million), transportation and logistics (88.17 million), utilities (50.28 million), and business trusts (8,300).
