Bursa Tumbles as Global Headwinds Overshadow Malaysia’s Growth Prospects

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 6 — Bursa Malaysia ended the week lower amid broad-based selling, tracking weaker regional markets as global equities came under renewed pressure following Wall Street’s sharp decline overnight.

At 5pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) lost 19.28 points or 1.17 per cent to 1,616.58 from Thursday’s close of 1,635.86.

Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Thong Pak Leng said that despite the sharp correction, he remained cautiously optimistic about the market, citing Malaysia’s resilient underlying economic fundamentals and corporate earnings prospects.

He said Bank Negara Malaysia’s decision to maintain the Overnight Policy Rate at 2.75 per cent yesterday, alongside its expectation of economic growth exceeding five per cent in 2026, provided further reassurance.

“We believe the current weakness is largely driven by external uncertainties rather than deteriorating domestic fundamentals, while more attractive valuations could encourage selective accumulation of fundamentally sound blue-chip stocks,” he told Bernama.
