JAKARTA, Aug 3 — Indonesia’s annual inflation stood at 2.88 per cent in July, driven mainly by higher prices in the food, beverages and tobacco, transportation, as well as personal care and other services groups.
Statistics Indonesia Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics, Ateng Hartono, said the Consumer Price Index (CPI) stood at 111.73 in July 2026, compared with 108.60 a year earlier, and 111.89 in June, while calendar-year inflation reached 1.65 per cent.
“The food, beverages and tobacco group recorded annual inflation of 2.97 per cent and contributed 0.87 percentage points.
“The commodities with the largest contribution to inflation in the group were fresh fish, cooking oil, rice, machine-made kretek cigarettes, chicken, red chillies, beef and hand-rolled kretek cigarettes,” he told an online press conference.
Ateng said the transportation group recorded annual inflation of 5.12 per cent, contributing 0.62 percentage points, mainly due to higher gasoline prices, airfares, cars, engine lubricants and motorcycles.
The personal care and other services group posted annual inflation of 9.04 per cent, contributing 0.61 percentage points, largely driven by jewellery prices, he said.
Meanwhile, Ateng said Indonesia recorded a monthly deflation of 0.14 per cent in July as lower food prices pulled down overall consumer prices.
He said the decline was mainly driven by increased production of shallots, red chillies and bird’s eye chillies in major producing areas, which boosted supply and lowered prices.
Despite the overall monthly deflation, he said the transportation group still recorded inflation, with gasoline remaining a contributor despite lower non-subsidised fuel prices taking effect on July 1.
He said the education group also recorded monthly inflation of 0.55 per cent at the start of the new academic year, mainly due to higher primary school, kindergarten and tutoring fees.
The personal care and other services group, however, he said, recorded monthly deflation as jewellery prices fell 3.58 per cent, contributing to the overall decline in consumer prices.
