NEW DELHI, Sept 12 — India Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his appreciation for Malaysia’s continued support in strengthening ASEAN-India relations during his bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today.
Modi, who is also the host for the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit, warmly welcomed his counterpart to India and appreciated Malaysia’s participation in the BRICS Summit as a Partner Country.
“The leaders took stock of the outcomes of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Malaysia in February 2026 and reviewed the progress in bilateral cooperation across a range of areas, including trade and investment, defence and security, semiconductors, infrastructure, digital economy, energy, fintech, education, tourism, and people-to-people ties,” according to a press release issued by India’s External Affairs Ministry following the meeting here, Saturday.
According to the release, Anwar, who is also finance minister, conveyed Malaysia’s concurrence to the establishment of a Consulate General of India in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
“The leaders exchanged views on key regional and global issues of mutual interest. They expressed their continued commitment to advancing the India-Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,” it said.
Malaysia’s has been a BRICS Partner Country since Jan 1, 2025.
Anwar arrived here Friday for the summit. This is his second visit to India.
Modern diplomatic relations between Putrajaya and New Delhi were established in 1957, with the bilateral ties elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during Anwar’s first visit here in August 2024.
India remains Malaysia’s largest trading partner in the South Asian region, with total trade between the two countries reaching RM79.49 billion (US$18.59 billion) in 2025.
Malaysia’s key export items comprised palm oil and palm oil-based agricultural products, as well as electrical and electronic products, while imports mainly consisted of agricultural, petroleum, and chemical products.
