SHAH ALAM, May 27 — The newly approved site for the upcoming public hospital in Petaling Jaya perfectly aligns with the needs of local residents in terms of accessibility, capacity, land cost, and proximity to surrounding communities.
Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the state government is prepared to facilitate and expedite all land-related processes to ensure that the Health Ministry’s (MOH) hospital construction benefits residents in the Petaling district, particularly those in Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, and Puchong.
The proposed hospital, with a capacity of about 500 beds, may be developed using a vertical concept similar to Ampang Hospital, without requiring an excessively large land area, thereby optimising costs.
“The Selangor government welcomes the announcement by Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad regarding the agreement on the proposed site for the construction of the Petaling Jaya Hospital.
“This decision follows the recent coordination meeting on May 14, which involved Federal, state, and local authority agencies.
“The announcement reflects the strong cooperation between both (the Federal and state governments) and provides clarity on how they reach decisions on public healthcare matters, particularly in the aspects of construction and operations, as provided under the Ninth Schedule of the Federal Constitution,” he said in a statement today.
Earlier, Dr Dzulkefly said that a six-hectare site in Taman Medan, currently occupied by the X Park Petaling Jaya South sports complex, has been identifiedas the proposed location for the new Petaling Jaya Hospital.
The site was identified following a recent technical meeting between the MOH and the state government, and is expected to address growing healthcare demand in the densely populated Petaling Jaya-Subang-Puchong corridor.
Amirudin added that the state government has been actively pursuing efforts to identify a suitable site for the Petaling Jaya Hospital since 2018, taking into account the growing population in the Petaling district, which now stands at 2.3 million.
Currently, residents in the district depend on the Sungai Buloh Hospital, with a capacity of 1,037 beds, the Shah Alam Hospital, with 490 beds, and the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre, with 946 beds.
“At the same time, the state government has worked closely with the MOH to address issues related to accessibility and congestion at public hospitals across Selangor.
“For example, the Cyberjaya Hospital and the Tanjong Karang Hospital, with capacities of 288 beds and 150 beds respectively, were completed in 2022 by the MOH with the cooperation of the state government on matters related to land affairs.
“Additionally, the Kapar Hospital, with a capacity of 312 beds, is scheduled for completion by the end of this year and is expected to help reduce congestion at Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Klang Hospital and Shah Alam Hospital,” he said.
Amirudin noted that state agencies and officers, including the State Economic Planning Unit, the Petaling Jaya City Council, and the Petaling District Office, will join the MOH in a site visit scheduled for this week.
