TAMPIN, June 5 — A special sitting of the Dewan Keadilan dan Undang (DKU) at the official residence of the Tunku Besar of Tampin here this morning turned tense briefly after several adat leaders and invited guests were initially stopped from entering the premises.
Police had reportedly locked the main gate and barred entry to the residence where a ceremony linked to the proclamation of a new Yang di-Pertuan Besar was expected to take place, according to reports by news outlets Berita Harianand The Star.
The Undang of Jelebu Datuk Maarof Mad Rashad, Undang of Johol Datuk Muhammad Abdullah, Undang of Rembau Datuk Raja Abdul Rahim Yasin, Datuk Shahbandar Sungei Ujong Datuk Seri Utama Badarudin Abdul Khalid, and former Dewan Negara president Tan Sri Rais Yatim were among those initially stopped from entering.
The Star reported local police saying they had received instructions not to allow anyone inside the compound at the time.
The situation escalated briefly when some of the adat leaders were prevented from being driven in after the gate was secured by police.
Berita Harian reported that the commotion occurred outside the main entrance shortly after the dignitaries arrived at about 9.30am.
An apparently upset Datuk Muhammad is said to have instructed police to open the gate amid the standoff.
The situation eased after Tunku Besar of Tampin Syed Razman Syed Idrus Al-Qadri personally went to the main gate and ordered it to be opened.
Authorities subsequently allowed the invited guests to enter the premises after the brief standoff.
The Star also reported that the adat leaders had earlier appointed Tunku Nazaruddin Tuanku Ja’afar as the new state ruler on April 19 and had moved to depose Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, a move rejected by the state government as unconstitutional.
