KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 13 — Russian President Vladimir Putin conveyed his warm regards to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, during a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Friday.
“We (Putin and Sultan Ibrahim) had the pleasure of meeting in Moscow this May at the celebrations of the 81st anniversary of Victory.
“We highly appreciate the high level and truly friendly nature of relations between Russia and Malaysia,” Putin said during the meeting on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, India, according to a transcript on the Kremlin’s website.
Earlier, Bernama reported that Anwar conveyed warm regards from Sultan Ibrahim to the Russian President and reiterated His Majesty’s invitation to Putin to make a state visit to Malaysia.
Sultan Ibrahim, who ascended the federal throne on Jan 31, 2024, has visited Russia three times.
His Majesty made a state visit to Russia in August 2025, followed by a special visit in January 2026 and a visit to Moscow in May for Russia’s Victory Day celebrations.
Meanwhile, Putin, during his meeting with Anwar, also noted that that the two countries would mark 60 years of diplomatic relations next year, expressing hope to approach the significant milestone “with a wealth of positive experience of cooperation and a solid foundation for its further expansion.”
“Contacts are developing dynamically across the security councils, parliaments, foreign ministries and other relevant agencies.
“Recently, in August, the fifth meeting of the Joint Russian-Malaysian Commission on Economic, Scientific, Technical and Cultural Cooperation was held in Vladivostok,” he said, adding that Russia attached great importance to the countries’ cooperation in education, science, technology and tourism.
Putin added that trade between the two countries had increased by 12.9 per cent last year, describing it as a “very encouraging figure.”
