KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 23 – Engineering industry players must not compromise safety in the pursuit of profits or project cost savings, said Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
“Cost control and profits are important, but never compromise on safety. Costs can be calculated, but human lives and safety are priceless,” he said at the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) 2026 Awards and Appreciation Ceremony tonight.
The event, held in conjunction with BEM’s 54th anniversary, featured five award categories covering youth innovation, project excellence, international achievements, and leadership.
MRCB adviser Datuk Seri Ir Dr Judin Abdul Karim was named the 2026 National Engineering Figure Award recipient, while UTP Associate Professor Ir Dr Serene Lock Sow Mun received the Young National Engineering Figure Award.
BEM also presented Special Recognition Awards to eight media organisations, including Bernama, for supporting public awareness efforts.
Nanta also urged local engineers to be more proactive in sharing their innovations and bolder in taking Malaysian professional services to international markets, including ASEAN, Asia, and the Middle East.
