Fujimori, Sánchez to Face Off in Peru Presidential Run-off Vote

MEXICO CITY, May 16 — Peru’s election authority on Friday finally announced the official results of last month’s presidential vote, confirming a run-off between conservative candidate Keiko Fujimori and left-wing contender Roberto Sánchez, reported German news agency dpa.

The two will face each other in a second round on June 7 following the slow counting of all ballots.

Fujimori, the daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori, who was convicted of human rights violations, came first with 17 per cent of the vote. She represents the conservative Popular Force party and is running for the presidency for the fourth time.

Sánchez, a former minister under jailed ex-president Pedro Castillo, secured 12 per cent and is the candidate of the Together for Peru party.

Far-right former Lima mayor Rafael López Aliaga narrowly missed the run-off with 11.9 per cent of the vote.

A total of 35 candidates competed in the first round of the highly fragmented election in April.

Peru’s political situation is highly unstable, marked by ongoing tensions between parliament and the government. The last president to complete a full five-year term was Ollanta Humala, who governed from 2011 to 2016.

The current president, José María Balcázar, is already the country’s eighth head of state in the past decade.
