HANGZHOU, Sept 23 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says Malaysia resolves differences with all neighbouring countries through sustained diplomatic engagement and constructive dialogue, instead of conflict or mistrust.
In a wide-ranging address marking the deep cultural and diplomatic bonds between Malaysia and China, Anwar shared personal stories of mutual respect and philosophical affinity with Chinese leaders.
He commended Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang for treating smaller nations with humility and as equal partners — a trait he described as crucial for developing countries navigating post-colonial realities and contemporary geopolitical pressures.
“People often ask me why I appear so close to China. My reply is: what kind of question is that? We maintain close ties with China because China is our neighbour.
“I find it hard to accept narratives claiming ‘China cannot be trusted’. Such views arise from certain prejudices, and they certainly do not represent us,” Anwar said at the global launch of the Chinese edition of his latest book, Rethinking Ourselves: Justice, Reform, and Ignorance in Postnormal Times, held here today.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution were also present at the launch.
The book explores how national identities may be reshaped and paths to coexistence forged amid the rise of newly independent nations and their struggles against colonialism and imperialism.
It advocates shifting focus toward “shared prosperity”, rather than the pursuit of self-interest alone.
Published by World Affairs Press under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, the Chinese edition was translated by Dr Yan Lijin.
Around 5,000 copies have been printed.
The original English version of Rethinking Ourselves: Justice, Reform, and Ignorance in Postnormal Times was released in October 2025 by Penguin Random House SEA.
Anwar, who also serves as Malaysia’s Finance Minister, is on a three-day working visit to Shanghai and Hangzhou. His itinerary includes high-level bilateral talks with Premier Li, as well as meetings with Chinese leaders and industry captains.
